The Grid

I hear a lot about how 'The Grid' is bad for D&D, and we should get back to a more abstract way of depicting combat. I would like to say I heartily disagree. I think the precise movement and...

Re: The Grid

OK, but saying 'we should all be using measuring tapes' is very purist, but it doesn't seem practical in these days. For one thing, it's much slower than using a grid. Also, a grid makes things like...

Re: The Grid

Nah, purist is putting a circular base on your mini that represents its engagement range, and minis become engaged when their bases touch. The way I see it, terminology like AD&D's use of "inches"...

Re: The Grid

Quite frankly, if I wanted to play a friggin' miniatures game, I'd buy one and play that. I want to play a role-playing game, not a board game. There's a reason that D&D moved away from it's roots...

Re: The Grid

I like the grid and I am a real geek about making maps, maps with funky stuff on them (you know, like those magical pools that had a random chart?) that make battle that much more unpredictable. It...

Re: The Grid

Ideally, Classic 4E will facilitate both forms of play. A mixture of both could be nice in a session too, with the flunkies done away with gridlessly, and a big elaborate set-piece at the end.

Re: The Grid

Yes, for those who like minis and grids: Don't use this as an argument for keeping this in "classic". It's us who dislike the fiddly bits with 2 square pushes here and 5 square teleports there who...

Re: The Grid

I am not opposed to using the grid or using an open field with measuring tape. That stuff is fine. Its the "fiddy bits" that the previous poster mentions that I think disrupts the flavor and coverts...

Re: The Grid

I agree with Mr Baron. My preference for a grid ends there; I certainly don't need the teleporting and pushing and reswizzling! edit: I do think that it's good for a fighter to be able to push enemies...

Re: The Grid

I'm most assuredly a grid naysayer. I don't mind the abstracted distances. I started in my 4e gaming group as a player, which is what changed my mind about the rules. An old friend was in town and...

Re: The Grid

When you read a fantasy or science fiction book that has elaborate combat, do you need a grid? or even a tape-measure? In Original and Advanced D&D, you didn't. The role-playing, story telling...

Re: The Grid

I like the approach in 4C System where combat is divided into "sectors" - roughly 10 foot by 10 foot (but easily bigger if necessary) that each represent a discrete section of the battlefield. You...

Re: The Grid

I don't mind minis, although we went without them for years and years in 1e/2e and a chunk of 3e. I agree though, it is a totally different kind of game when your focus is on the grid. I wouldn't mind...

Here's a blog post from Mike Mearls that describes a house rule for playing 4E without a tactical battlemap. I did a similar thing with my son the other day - we used minis & a grid but he didn't...

Re: The Grid

Nice blog entry, and that might be a great catalyst for this project. Is it conceivable to write an alternative set of "loose" combat rules, or is that too much against the grain of core 4e?...
